How to install rope seal Case 1490 ?

Does anyone know how to install the rope seal on the crankshaft on the rear end on a Case 1490?

The repair instruction book says that the two rope seals are made in the length it should be, and tells how to install it, and that I can not cut anything of from it.

The rope seal I have is not original parts, and it sticks out about a half centimeter, much more than in the book.

Someone said that the rope seals should be laying in oil before installing, but the book does not say anything about that.
Should I use oil?

Another strange thing is that I got the rope seal from a seal kit for the lower part of the engine, and this seal kit is the same as the kit for the Case 1390 and 1290. But 1290 and 1390 has a thinner crankshaft than the 1490, so if the rope seal in the seal kit fits 1490, it could possibly not fit 1390.

been a long time since i installed rope seals. dont remember soaking them in oil, u need to use like a wooden dowel or wooden hammer handle i have used. need to just keep rolling and pressing it in. you have buggard that one up on the ends. no need to hit the ends. there is also a tool for that. like a 1/2 round circle . its a tricky and time consuming job to get it worked in. then oil good once installed . plus you got to make sure there is no ends sticking up to get caught betwen the 2 halves.
 
if your confident its fully pressed in good then i would use a sharp razor blade and cut it flush... meaning i would leave the centre of it just a hair higher with edges flush so when its squeezed together nothing gets caught between the two halves when torqued up. oil up good before installing on crank.
 
are u replacing both halves ,? or just the bottom?? as in reading your post your talking about getting the lower seal?? if only doing lower half i will give different instuctions.
because in auto's with the rope seal crank should be out for best outcome. but what you have here appears as the two halves are removeable.
 
No it is both halves in the rear.
But the repair instruction book says very clear that I must not cut the seal, If I do, it will leak it says.
Maybe the rope seals I have got is to long?
I can not use much oil in this case, because I have to use loctite on several surfaces near the seal. It must be dry and oil free.
 
From your description I'm guessing you have the wrong seal. But are the two halves the same size? Some are built with the longer "half" to be installed in the block, so that it sticks out a bit, and the shorter half in the cap, so that the split between them is not exactly at the split between the metal parts. On old Chevys we used a sort of Chinese-finnger-trap tool to pull the seal around the crank on the block side, cut it just a bit long, then bolt the cap onto it with that end cut flush. Prelube is essential for any seal unless you intend to destroy the seal and the crankshaft as soon as you start it. Lube it, torque it down, then if you must use loktite remove and clean each bolt and hole individually and dry and reassemble with loktite. I see no way you can avoid cutting that seal if you use it, but I'm still thinking you have the wrong seal.
 
Both are the same length, an both of them sits in these retainers behind the engine block.
Yes, maybe it is the wrong lengt. I will try to contact the dealer tomorrow because this is strange.
 
Every DB rear main rope I have encountered needed trimmed. My manuals all state that they shouldn't be trimmed. No way, no how can they be installed as is.

I press in firmly, then I use a razor blade to trim, and put a tiny dot of silicone where the ends meet.
 
What RG says. Just did one last fall and trimmed it. No leaks. Same for all the others that I have done. Never had one I didn't have to trim.
