1951 CA wiring

I am finishing up a class project with my students and I have wired enough tractors, but this one kindof stumps me. Everytime
I connect the wiring from the starter to the Ammeter and then put the wiring box cover together, I get a short and lots of
sparks. Everything is grounded including the ammeter box, I have postive ground. The starter is grounded and hooked up
properly. I am just not sure what I am missing. Any suggestions? Picture for reference.

Id bet a terminal from the starter switch or light/charging switch touches when you put the cover on.

(quoted from post at 13:56:26 05/26/23) Id bet a terminal from the starter switch or light/charging switch touches when you put the cover on.

Also, make sure the insulating bushings and washers (if they are separate) or grommets are in place in the ''Ammeter retainer'', keeping the Ammeter studs insulated from the retainer and the cover.

If the retainer for a heat gauge or oil pressure gauge accidentally got ''subbed'' in won't have the insulators.

It's POSSIBLE for the Ammeter or light switch to be internally shorted to their housings, as well.

Nice looking CA.

Take the wires off the starter switch terminal. Clamp the battery cable and wire to the ammeter together and see if the short is gone. if it is the problem should be in the starter switch. If the short is still there it would point to primary wiring side. Some things it could be, besides the ones already mentioned, might be a pinched wire or stuck cut-out points in a cut-out or regulator. Unhooking the wire from the regulator/cut-out would eliminate that possibility. Watching the ammeter while connecting the battery might narrow the search as well. If the ammeter moves, the short should be in a circuit going through the ammeter.

Thank you for your comments and help. I will take a look at the suggestions and see what I come up with. I bet your suggestions are in the ballpark.
