Allis 185 diesel starting issues

Hello all,

I'm hoping to get a little help with my starting issues.

It happened yesterday as I was mowing 3rd cutting hay. Tractor runs beautiful but gas gauge is funky. I was mowing for around 5 hours and tractor started acting like it was running out of gas (I knew gas was getting low and only had a few passes left). I immediately shut the tractor off and drove to get gas. Put 10 gallons in and it started back up. It was spitting and sputtering for a solid 10 seconds then started idling normal again. I finished the field and it ran for 10 minutes before shutting off.

I wait an hour, go to hop on it again, and it wont start. It turned over for about 4 seconds then puttered out. I have used the tractor all summer long and is extremely reliable.

I am going to buy a new fuel filter today when I get out of work to try. I also am going to use the manual pump, work my way down to the injectors, etc.

My only thought is sediment from the bottom of the tank got stirred up or air in the lines. It just seems strange how in ran for 10 minutes with the new gas but now won't even start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If diesel, loosen the two screw timing cover on injection pump side so fuel can leak out. If engine starts/runs WITH the fuel leak, but dies with the cover screws tight,
then injection pump needs repair. Your post is unclear whether it's gas or diesel engine.

Fuel flow start with sediment bowl. You might have goop in
tank blocking flow. Dirty filter etc. Back in the day Dad and I
had an F2 combine. It had a warning light if diesel filter started
to pug. It would come on before engine started to bog down
at all.

I will try this when I get home, it is a diesel. Sorry about that, I had it in the title but not the post. Thank you, I will keep you guys updated

I took the sediment bowl off last night, it was filled with a bunch of gunk. Going to replace the filter today and put the cleaned out bowl back in.

With the sediment bowl REMOVED, turn on the petcock all the way. There should be TWO STREAMS of fuel gushing from the bowls base. If not two gushing streams of fuel, the sediment bowl base or outlet to the tank is plugged with gunk. While you are there, throw away the screen in the glass bowl. Not needed.
