Hello All,

Our D17 Allis has spung a leak in the head gasket and I will be replacing that this week. Does anyone how what the head bolts need to be torqued to and if I need to do a hot retorque? Also what would the sequence look like in tightening the head bolts - Start in the middle and work your way out?

Thanks!

Well, if you were my neighbor, I'd tell you to drive it off in the weeds and walk away from it. Your cylinder sleeves have sunk below flush with the top of the block and you can shove a new HG in there if you like, but it WILL eventually fail again.

Well that is unfortunate. Hopefully that is
not the case when I take it apart this
week. If it is then I guess it will be time
for a rebuild or swap.

The sleeves should stand up .002" to .005" from the deck surface. They will be flush or below flush. The cylinder head will be cracked in 6 places. If you don't use it the plow and disc with (hard work) and just very light jobs, it may run for a while. They are notorious for this with the D-19 turbo-diesel being the worst offender.

The problem with transplanting a 301 ( or the 4-cylinder turbo version of the 301) is the power steering. The newer engines block is wider and lower where the power steering ram and control valve are located. The 301 will not fit without lengthening the hoods and frame. The 4-cylinder turbo engine will fit for length, but there's the steering/power steering issue.
