Ab Jenkins 67.87 MPH Tractor

Morning,
I just discovered that Mr. Jenkins also ran the fastest tractor in 1935. One poster on BangShift said the Jenkins Allis Chalmers as well as his own had a hidden road gear. Curious if this was common.
Thank's, Chris

Such high gears were fitted by the factory to demonstrate the tractors, the Allis Chalmers model U, on pneumatic tires, was raced at fair grounds to impress farmers as
to how good the tires were on the road and to show how good a tractor would handle as compared to iron tires/wheels that were the normal at the time. I have never heard
that those gears were released on any "normal" tractor, they were strictly for show.

I don't know about hidden but there were
indeed other hi speed gear sets installed
in real working world applications. As
originally produced high gear (4th) in
then U transmission was straight through
or 1 to 1 input shaft to pinion shaft
giving about 8MPH if I mind right. This
gear was locked out on tractors shipped
on steel. Back to your question. The
special high speed gear set was placed in
one of the other positions, 1-3.
Normally the gear sets under drove the
pinion shaft via the counter shaft but
the high speed gear set was used to
overdrive the pinion shaft. These sets
were found in the oil field winch
tractors converted by Fred Cooper. I
don't know if the gear sets were supplied
by Allis or manufactured by Cooper.

Hey Butch, that's interesting about the oil field tractors. How fast did they go? do you know? I doubt if they were geared for 60 plus.

I take it the tractors were built to travel in convoy with the other trucks and equipment instead of being hauled?

(quoted from post at 08:28:15 11/20/20) So how did the Ford end up?
8N Race Results
say the Jenkins record should stand in it's own category unless someone had a tractor modified or equipped the same as the original. Ab Jenkins would probably gone top speed if his tractor was modified as the 8N.

Picture of Jenkins sometime after setting the land speed record for a tractor in Sept 1934. The picture location is unknown. He toured various state fairgrounds and county fairs in the Midwest promoting Firestone rubber tires for tractors. This tractor had a high speed road gear custom made for this run. After farmers saw this tractor it was the beginning of the end for steel wheeled tractors. This speed record for a tractor stood for many decades.

I would assume that the gears used on the Cooper oilfield tractors were not the sane ratio as the race types? Have heard various stories about how fast they went with most common being in the 20MPH range. One would assume that was at the normal goverened engine RPM,, probably not so with the racers.
