Went up north of St. John Mi this morning and bought the donor motor for the 45. they had the donor motor running when I get there. Met fellow yt'er Ross Boots his dad Dave and dog Riley. Ross is on the right Dave is on the left. That's me in the middle. Thanks again for making this happen. A few pic of the donor. Before and after.

and the questions begin: if the gleaner motor has 64hp and the 45 has 39hp and both have 226 ci. where does the gleaner get it hp? I have to use the govoner off the 45 on the gleaner motor, will this cut the hp back down to the same as the 45? Thanks Dale

Congratulations. That will really perk up the old girl. The WD45 was the first version of the 226. Low compression, and low speed. The Gleaner E engine was well along in production, where the compression was upped several times. The D17 was geared differently, so at PTO speed the engine was running faster. And of course there's a difference between engine, belt, PTO, and drawbar HP.
The best part is that you now have a higher pressure, full flow filtered lubrication system.

I see the oil piping is a little different, and by the looks of the old crank, more oil was always needed.

A WD-45 engine was 50.6 flywheel HP @1400 loaded RPM. A D-17 (E Gleaner) was 55.6 flywheel HP @1400 loaded RPM. The same D-17 engine was 63.2 flywheel HP @1650 loaded RPM's. Allis-Chalmers chose to use 1650 RPM as the rated speed in the D-17 tractor and E Gleaner combine. So, if you use the WD-45 governor and 1400 RPM governor spring, you'll be 5 HP better than the WD-45 engine.

Governor spring from a D-17 is all that's needed. Governors from a WD-45 and D-17 are the same except for the spring/plunger assembly. 63.2 flywheel HP which would be about 56HP at the PTO @ 1650 engine RPM loaded.

Hey Dale, good
visiting with you!
Man, you don't mess
around, got it
stripped and washed
already, and wow, that
old gray paint looks
like new now! After
you left, dad was
commenting on how he
couldn't believe how
bold some people are,
after you were telling
us about the guy
cutting and taking the
wood from your road
R.O.W. and refusing to
leave until the law
forced him to. Some
people just think they
are entitled to
anything. Ridiculous!
I'll be watching the
AC forum now to see
how your project comes
along. Thanks Dale!

Ross

Hi I did that conversion several years ago and the oil line will need some modification for your steering shaft to clear and use 45 gov. also I would also change dist housing so u can put oil in engine. gets kind of hard through valve cover. U will like the conversion. Just my 2 cents

crank is too long! My belt pulley will not go on all the way, bottoms out. Looks like I will have to mill the end of the belt pulley. Other than that all goes well. Dale

That is the crank pulley off the 45! Will have to use the water pump off the 45 also as the gleaner waterpump inlet is in the wrong spot.

I did this same conversion in a wd. I had to get a 45 pulley because the hole in the pulley goes all the way through. Not sure what exactly is going on but if you have the pulley off the right one the center goes is an open hole and the crank just sticks out through it. Works fine as long as you dont try to crank start it.

My crank belt pulley has about a 1/4x1/4 ridge at the end. If not for that it would push on and the crank would stick thro.
