Collector Profile for John Adamowski

I have been an avid fan of agriculture from my youngest days. I remember my dad planting our two acres near O'Hare Airport (Orchard Field) with the help of his Wards Walk Behind and an occasional neighbor with an 8N. For a while he had an old Farmall but when his 6 year old, me, started it while he was at work, he decided to get rid of it.

I watched the city grow around us and fields of hay, corn and pumpkins, turn into townhouses and factories. Instead of moving to the city, the city moved around us.

My love of the country was in my soul, so as soon as I could, I purchased 120 acres, then 40 more, adjacent. Tractors, the older the better became part of my life. I tried to do the farming, but as many have found, it alone cannot often support one not involved in it from the start. So I became a teacher and that has been my calling for quite a few years.

Recently, I have gotten the bug to restore and use the tractors and implements that built the great farming industry. Running, I have a 140 John Deere L&G tractor, a Craftsman L&G tractor, an International H, an International M and a TO-20 Ferguson. My disc is so old, I have not yet figured out who made it and my most recent addition is a Massey Harris double bottom plow on steel. I have to find numbers on it somewhere.

The M is just in the first steps of restoration, after that will be the disc and some wood bearings. Then it is the marketplace and a hunt for new toys.

Today's Featured Article - It Can't Be Done! - A Tractor Story - by Neil Campbell. I'll never forget the time back when I was a boy baling hay on our Farm in Big Rapid, Michigan. The most memorable event that took place was a trip up the steepest incline on the farm pulling an old New-Idea baler with a pony-motor for power and a haywagon. I had just talked my Dad into buying an old John Deere B with 6-speeds ahead and I was real proud of it, except it was a little smaller than the Case tractor that we normally ... [Read Article]
