| Collector Profile for Shorty Dear |
I was raised on an old model D. My Dad thought 9 years old was about right for a starting age. I spent two terms in Uncle's army and then started baling hay for a living. Well, after 16 years of that, I thought I deserved something better so I went to work for the local John Deere dealership. I spent 15 really good years selling new John Deeres and in 1991 decided it was time to make some new friends and customers. I quit John Deere dealership and started selling antiques, mostly tractors at first and then engines and plows and JD parts. I have really met a lot of real good people in this business and my wife Odie and I sure are enjoying life. We are blessed with enough sales to make ends meet and that is good enough for us. Recollections of a John Deere GP - by Charlie Cook. I grew up on my dad's 280 acre general farm in Western Michigan. Dad's only tractor when I was very young was the old GP. My first recollection of this tractor was when dad allowed my brother and myself to ride on the tractor with him driving. One of us would sit on the left fender (away from the clutch) and other would sit on the gas tank and hold onto the crankcase breather pipe.
