Collector Profile for Roy Sanders

I have accumulated a collection of 3 Cletrac crawler tractors. A HG68, OC-3 and a BD series dozer. The HG68 is one that belonged to an uncle of mine who has been dead for years. The old tractor was still parked under the shed, just the way he had left it. It is in the hills of the Ozarks in northern Arkansas. I remembered that old tractor as a kid, especially my uncle letting me 'drive it' as he walked behind it. Since I am an aircraft mechanic and a tinkier besides, I decided to wake the old tractor up. Went up there early one morning (about 100 miles away), took tools, fresh gas, oil, etc. and spent a day working on it. Dumb me, I didnt have a crank. Didnt think about that! So we tried to pull start it with my truck. She snorted and belched, snorted and belched, snorted and belched but wouldnt start. Hmmmm, I thought. She oughta start. Finally the light bulb lit up in my head. I told my buddy Roger, 'go ahead and pull it foward about a foot'. He didnt know what I was doing or thinking. But I observed the direction that the fan blade turned. And guess what! It wasnt turning in the proper direction, according to the pitch in the blades. I WAS IN REVERSE!!! The shift pattern was a little weird. Anyway, it wasnt like most modern 4 speed shift patterns. But this isnt a modern machine either..ha. I put it in a 'forward' gear and she fired right off. Boy, was she mad! I'll just conclude this story by saying she's been running fine ever since. As often as possible, I'll go up there and crank her up (with a crank that I fabricated). Starts on 2nd crank or somethings not right. Might move it down here wear I live sometime soon. This was the first time it was started since 1977. Well anyway, my interest in Cletracs sort of grew, because no one I've talked to around here knows anything about what a Cletrac is.I did manage to find the other tractors in the newspaper classifieds over a period of a couple of years. Currently in the process of overhauling the Hercules diesel engine in the BD dozer. Parts are extremely hard to find for this obsolete engine. I would like to share my interest with other 'old iron' folks out there. Hope to hear back from you. Thanks for letting me share my Cletrac story with you.
